Some medical conditions prevent or inhibit massage treatments from taking place or may require GP approval beforehand. These include the following:
· Cardiovascular conditions and circulatory problems
· Haemophilia
· Any condition currently being treated by a GP
· Medical oedema
· Osteoporosis
· Arthritis
· Nervous/psychotic conditions
· Epilepsy
· Recent operations
· Any dysfunction of the nervous system, (Multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, Motor neurone disease)
· Bell’s Palsy
· Trapped/pinched nerve, (e.g. sciatica)
· Inflamed nerve
· Cancer or cancer treatment in the past 2 years
· Whiplash
· Slipped disc
· Acute rheumatism
If GP permission cannot be obtained, then the client MUST give written consent prior to the massage taking place.
Contraindications that Restrict Treatment
· Contagious or infectious diseases
· Swelling
· Varicose veins
· Diabetes
· Pregnancy
· Cuts
· Bruises
· Scar tissue (2 years for major operations, 6 months for minor)
· Sunburn
· Hormonal implants
· Recent fractures
